The 4,040
Rules of Art Conduct
The International Royal Academy
of Post-Dogmatist Arts, in an effort to validate Ad Reinhardt’s public
assertion that there are 4,040 rules of art conduct, is sponsoring the
creation of 'The 4,040 Rules of Art Conduct'
The following rules have been
approved by the Committee for the Creation of ‘The 4,040 Rules of Art
Conduct’ which was formed in 1990 for the singular purpose of gathering
together and publishing these rules for the betterment of the art world.
In Art News Magazine, Volume
55, No. 3; May, 1956, p 36/37 Mr. Reinhardt stated that there are 4,040
rules of art conduct and established a cosmology of the art world in “Joke
by Ad Reinhardt, ‘ A Portend of the Artist as a Yhung Mandala’’ The
Following is the opening statement of the Art Mandala Created by Reinhardt
which contains various clip art type images and all arranged around a Tibetan
Mandala design...
"The Art World was recreated
in 4 Days in 4 sections, 40 years ago, and originally in 4004 B.C. Today
minor artists have 400 followers Disciples and more favored mediocre Artists
have 44,000 Devotees approximately. There are 4,040 Rules of Art Contuct.
The Ten Thousand Things are
Four. Art History has Four Sides. There are Four Art Publications and Four
Canons of Art Criticism, Judgement Days are Four Seasons.
The Four Sacred Art Texts art
Confusionist, Doughist, Tantrumist and Sham-Buddieist. The Four Art Castes
are Purehatpriests, Guruteacherhats, Sunnyascetichats and Bighatdevotees.
The Four Museums are the Four Mirrors of the Western Paradices.
Artistbuddies are Four Animals,
half-hero, half-fauve, Holy-Nage-Beasts of the Four-Horae-Sacrificial-Ceremonies,
whose entrails feed the Four Bird-Monsters.
Criticbuddies are Four Birds,
half-harpy, half-diety, Garrudabuzzards and Localpalies, who fly the Four
Winds, who make the music of the Art-Spheres.
Curatorbuddies are the Four
Guardians of the Four Directions and the Four Pillars of the Milky Mays,
Lotus-Eaters and Boom-Pickers, the Collecting unconsciousness of the Art-Race.
The Art Universe is Square.
Art is a Big Booming Flux-Phenomena and Ablyss. Your Soul's a sold-circle
in the company-square. The Art-House is not a home."
It should be noted here as a
clarification that ‘conduct’ is defined not as behavior but as transference
or conveyance as in electricity or in terms of art, creativity or image
