The 4,040 Rules of Art Conduct The Avoidances - 0800-0999 rule no. 0801 - 'Don't be an idiot, be a Post-Dogmatist.' (ct) rule no. 0802 - Verbosity shields ignorance. (Marc Awodey) rule no. 0803 - rule no. 0804 - rule no. 0805 - rule no. 0806 -
rule no. 0817 - ' 'Avoid obscuring your intuition with excessive reasoning.' (ct) COMMENT: The mind and heart need to be clear and tranquil for one to have a full experience of one's intuition. Intuition, by its nature draws on an inner knowledge of things that reason cannot substantiate. Therefore, attempting to apply reason to your intuition is like stirring up mud on the floor of a clear pond. When you do so the clarity of mind needed to act on intuition is obscured. A work of art could be said to be the result of of a series of subtle intuitive impulses that the artist acts on as the impetus for the creation of the work. Reason can only be applied retrospectively in order to analyze the pattern by which the work was created. 0836th Rule - 'Take care not to become so knowledgeable that you become stupid.' (ct) COMMENT: Sometimes when you spend too much time in study it is often because you are afraid to actually work. Artists sometimes hide in their knowledge of art history or techniques that they don't have to face themselves in the studio. The best thing is to forget whatever you know and just work, create a new body of knowledge which is your actual work as an artist. (ct) rule no. 0857 - 'We must take care that our knowledge of things does not become a substitute for our experience of things.' (ct) rule no. 0873 - If it makes your mother nervous, you may be on to something. If it makes you nervous, you're there. (Fortunata56@aol.com) |
