hope and appliance buying, a time of family values and of post-war overbreeding.
The thing that makes Winston Smith's work so subversive is the way he uses these sanitised magazine images from the '50s that fairly scream 'consume' at you and exposes them as the propaganda they are - like the 'friendly hand of nuclear energy' seen at left, which bears a striking resemblance to the Hand Of God, endorsing nuclear energy and by extension, nuclear weapons ("Boys will be boys", the old guy sighs to himself.") I leave you with this thought, from the bottom of nearly every page of 1950s NationalGeographics - "Mention The National Geographic - It Identifies You!" |
